Finally saw “MASH” (Robert Altman, 1970). I’d never heard the original version of “Suicide Is Painless”, only the “M.A.S.H.” version from the television series. Elliot Gould definitely stole the show, Donald Sutherland was a close second.
You really see Altman’s open style of film making as the camera placement and focus can be pretty random at times, conveying the idea of a busy community of military personnel living in a dangerous hot zone.
Coincidentally my Grandfather was a scout for two tours of duty in Korea. I remember asking him if he ever killed anyone when I was a little kid. He never had any mental health problems like most returning GIs, but Mom says he still doesn’t like to remember it.
